Furniture can be used as a form of artistic design and is considered decorative art. In addition to furniture's usual functional role, it can also serve a symbolic or religious purpose in many cases. There is always a demand for new and exciting styles in every aspect of fashion today, including furniture design. For centuries fashions use the influence of old designs and adapt them so that they are more modern and in keeping with the times.

Modern furniture is furniture that has been designed after the nineteenth century; this period changed drastically, and is now less rustic. Although, the rustic style furniture is still greatly loved and used today.

When we needed to think up new shapes and colours, materials such as moulded plastics were used to experiment with. This was mainly used in Asian and African cultures. The Japanese are well known for their simplicity, large planes of colour and contrasting use of pattern. Many cultures like these are also used when experimenting with new styles and designs.

Oak furniture is now widely used in home design because it is hardwearing, a beautiful colour and it is very versatile where it can be used for both modern and traditional designs.
