Coffee Table Buying Guide

We cannot communicate just how important coffee tables are: whether it’s a place to rest your cup of tea, show off your fancy oversized books or favourite magazines, eat around, play cards on – it’s there. Naturally finding themselves in the centre of a room, coffee tables demand attention and it’s therefore essential you get the right one. They are also in near constant use, making it important that is both practical and stylistically balanced. In this guide we reveal how to choose the perfect coffee table for your room.

Which Coffee Table?

Coffee tables are available in a huge range of shapes, sizes and materials. From the traditional to the downright bizarre, coffee tables really provide an opportunity for you to express your personality and define the stylistic tone of your living room.

A very large proportion of coffee tables on the market are made from wood. Wooden coffee tables are stylish, available in a range of colours and styles, as well as practical; well-made wooden coffee tables are able to take the weight of almost any coffee table book you throw at it. However, you can also get coffee tables made from glass, metal, marble, and reclaimed items that can be reapproriated to be as bold as you want to go.

Shelves/Drawers

Coffee tables are available with some limited storage options, including shelves and drawers allowing you to declutter the surface and store items like magazines and remote controls out of the way. You can also use large chests and trunks as coffee tables, which will have additional storage, although it can be harder to access.

Shopping For a New Coffee Table

When it comes to shopping for a new coffee table, there are a number of considerations to take into account. The potential impact of a new coffee table is huge so take a moment to think about exactly what you want to achieve before beginning your search.

Purpose

The most important consideration before buying a coffee table is what you intend to use it for. Coffee tables have come a long way from just holding coffee like its name would suggest. All around the country coffee tables are being used as dinner tables, room dividers, remote control holders, a place to serve drinks and snacks and many more inventive uses that we simply don’t have space to list.

Decide how often you will use the table. Will it be used every day? Or will it be set aside or even used for storage? Deciding what you want to use it for will help you answer these questions and bring up some more too.

Online or In-Store?

When people start looking for furniture, they will at some point ask themselves – should I buy instore or online? It’s a very common question and there is no simple answer. Both options have their benefits. Some people find being able to see and touch a coffee table in store useful, however if you want more choice and a better deal in terms of pricing then online is probably right for you. Make sure that wherever you purchase your coffee table from that they accept refunds and offer a delivery service if required.

Coffee Table Style Guide

Coffee tables are available in endless styles. From the material it is made of - wood, metal, glass - to the look - modern, vintage, classic, country. Before you start to look for a coffee table, have a think about the overall look and feel you’re trying to create in your front room. What role will the coffee table play in creating this look? Will it be a centrepiece or do you want it to blend in?

Material

When it comes to picking a wood type you will want to consider the character of the wood. A solid oak coffee table is a timeless, hard-wearing and indispensable piece of furniture that will act as the focal point of your living room. A pine coffee table is typically less expensive than oak, but it is just as solid and boasts unique grains and a lighter finish. If you’re looking for a darker wooden coffee table, you might want to opt for a walnut table. Walnut coffee tables are dark and very sleek, adding a sophisticated and rich feeling to a room.

Traditional or farmhouse/country looks are complimented by traditional wooden tables such as those made from oak or pine. If you want an altogether more contemporary look then look for pieces that feature steel or glass elements. If you’re looking to create a unique vintage look, then consider reclaimed wood or painted white tables for a shabby chic style.

How To Accessorise Your Coffee Table

As with any item of furniture that provides a surface, especially one so focal in a room, you have a great opportunity to accessorise it and make it personal. Bowls of coloured stones, pot pourri, flowers or a potted plant, and candles can all add elements of colour and help aid stylistic cohesion. You can really express yourself but always bear in mind the practical elements. Coasters are a good idea for protecting your coffee table surface and can also add colour. Similarly, trays are good for safeguarding the surface but can add real character with a whole range of styles available and another creative space. It makes sense to think about how all the items on your coffee table work together and compliment each other. And remember don’t be afraid to adapt them to different situations.

Where to Place Your Coffee Table?

You are free to trial different layouts in your living room but some general advice is worth considering. Tables located in front of a sofa are typically rectangular with round or oval tables best for avoiding bumped heads if you have children. When it comes to size, small coffee tables look good next to a chair or sofa or in the corner of a room. These also may double up as lamp tables. Large coffee tables on the other hand make more of a statement and suit the centre of a room, a bay window or under a windowsill.

Measuring for Your Coffee Table

Coffee tables have evolved to the extent that there is no ‘typical’ size of coffee table. The most important thing to remember is to measure your space before starting shopping for your coffee table. If you are looking for a coffee table to sit in front of your sofa, we recommend that the table should be around two thirds the length of the sofa. This means it looks big enough in front of the sofa but also leaves space to walk around the coffee table. It also means that no one on the sofa will have to stretch too much to reach a cup of tea.

You must also consider the height of your existing furniture. Measure the height of your chairs, sofas and surrounding furniture such as TV stand to ensure you get the right height coffee table to match. A coffee table should be no lower than 1-2 inches from the seat of your sofa. It certainly shouldn’t be taller. A taller sofa will require a taller table.

If you’re short on space you might want to consider a nest of tables. These typically comprise of 3 tables that all stack naturally underneath each other saving you space but also offering extra surface space when you need it.

Caring For Your Coffee Table

With a little regular care, your coffee table can bring pleasure for many years to come.

Do

  • Clean and dust the coffee table regularly and wax periodically. (Always test new cleaning products on a leg to make sure it doesn’t damage the finish)

  • Use trays as well as coasters to protect the surface of the coffee table

  • Deal with any spillages straight away to avoid staining

Don't

  • Don’t drag your coffee table as this can damage the joints as well as your flooring

  • Don’t leave sharp objects and chemicals like cosmetics that can do damage to the material

  • Don’t place hot dishes or pans on the coffee table – always use a heatproof mat

  • Don’t place your coffee table by a radiator or in direct sunlight as this can cause damage to the table overtime
