Bedside Table Buying Guide

Bedside tables are so much more than a convenient place to put a glass of water, your phone and the latest page-turner. The right bedside table can really tie your bedroom together while serving a range of practical purposes.

Are you a piler, compiler or a perfectionist? Everyone is different and that means we each have our own individual requirements from a bedside tables. As with anything that surrounds and plays a role in your relaxation and sleep, it is worth spending some time getting it right. A bedside table does impact on your bedroom and in turn your bedtime routine.

In terms of interior design, bedside tables are generally used to visually anchor the bed, so it doesn't seem as if it's floating in the room. The range of styles means that you can be as adventurous as you like, choosing between statement pieces to sensible storage units. In order to help you strike the right balance between style and practical considerations, we have put together the ultimate guide to bedside tables. We take you through how to measure, pick and accessorise your bedside cabinet.

Which Bedside Table?

When it comes to beside tables, there are a number of different options out there. There are bedsides in a range of glass, Perspex, metal, antique, timber, rustic, painted or lacquered depending on your décor and style. You can also experiment with different shapes, from square and rectangular to circular. And that’s why it’s important to ensure you have the style and type of bedside that best meets your needs.

There are of course practical considerations when it comes to choosing a bedside table. Will you be using it to store bedtime essentials like a lamp and an alarm clock? Or do you want to make a feature of it, accessorising it with items that celebrate your personality? The main practical features to bear in mind are related to the number of drawers, shelves and doors.

There are bedside tables available with shelves so you can store books and magazines with easy access. You can also get bedside tables with doors, concealing plenty of valuable storage space. If you are aiming for a minimalist clutter-free look then these options definitely make sense. Alternatively, you can have an open storage space for easy access, dividing it with shelves as you wish. You may wish to opt for a single swing door or a double door too. You can combine these options to suit your style and practical requirements. A single drawer with an open storage space is a popular choice.

When it comes to design, your bedside table should tie in with and add to your overall bedroom look. It doesn’t have to match other furniture items but should still work within a minimalist and modern set-up or a more rustic theme. A reclaimed bedside table can really contribute to a deliciously shabby chic look. If your bedroom is a cosy old-world sanctuary then opt for antique and classic designs. However, if clutter is your enemy then keep the lines clean and the design modern and Scandinavian.

Shopping For a New Bedside Table

Choosing bedsides with storage would be a practical decision, especially if you have a lot of bedroom paraphernalia that needs to be tucked away. If a standard bedside table with storage is too chunky for your space, then why not choose a step up bedside with multiple compartments above each other and a basket for a rustic look. If you do want to opt for large bedsides then why not use them as dressing tables as well? Alternatively you could just have one large bedside in between beds (if you have twin beds for example).

Online or In-Store?

When it comes to buying furniture, there is a common debate as regards to shopping online or instore. Both options have their benefits. There are some people that need to see and touch a bedside table in store, however online there are a plethora of options and you can ensure you have the best price. Make sure that where you purchase your cabinet from accepts refunds and offers a delivery service if required.

Bedside Table Style Guide

It makes sense to choose a bedside table that matches your lifestyle. Are you someone who likes to have lots of things around you or are you more the minimalist type?

Think about the overall effect you are creating. If you have a chest as a bedside, a high headboard would be ideal to balance the look. It's normal to choose bedsides from the same range as the bed, but not necessarily. Bedsides don't need to match but if they do, break them up with a padded headboard instead. If you want to go with bedsides that don't match, try coordinating with matching lamps instead. Mismatched bedside cabinets can be very chic but try and get them similar in height.

Modular beds tend to have inbuilt bedsides which though lower than the mattress are still held together by the fabric and lines of the bed. In general keep accessories simple with just the essentials such as a lamp, photo frame, clock and vase for example.

The most important thing is to choose the bedside to suit you. Generally it is best to opt for bedside tables that match the height of the mattress or just above so that you can see clocks and reach items easily. The tables also provide the perfect visual line if they're the same height as the bed.

There are considerations when it comes to size too. If you have a bigger bed, like a king size, then you will need a bigger bedside table to provide balance. You want to avoid the bed drowning out the bedside table at all costs. A mirrored beside cabinet can be larger because of their mirrored effect. Mirrored bedside tables reflect light which means that it generates a sense of space whilst creating actual storage space at the same time. They also reflect the shapes and colours around them, helping them tie in with your bedroom.

Alternatively, glass topped bedsides look elegant and chic, especially when teamed with traditional furniture. You could even choose a wide range of other pieces of furniture, different sized bedsides, small chests, desks or even stools. These are striking and more unique than your average bedside.

How To Accessorise Your Bedside Table

How much you want to accessorise your beside table is entirely up to you. You may use the bedside for practical night-time essentials only or you may wish to celebrate that extra surface and accessorise with style, tying it in with the wider bedroom theme. You can accessorise with ornaments, candles, a small plant or vase of flowers. Your choice of lamp is a key consideration as once again you can opt for practical, finding the ideal lighting to devour the latest thriller, or a lamp with a stylish lampshade.

Measuring For Your Bedside Table

When it comes to measuring for a bedside table, the main considerations are the height and size. In terms of size, they shouldn't be so small as to be drowned out by the bed so the bigger your bed, the bigger the table.

When taking measurements, be sure to measure the following:

  • Height: Height is the most important aspect when it comes to measuring for a bedside table. You will need to measure the height of your mattress. The top of the bedside table should be inline or slightly above this measurement. You don’t want a bedside table that is lower than your mattress but you also want to avoid reaching up to turn on a lamp or grab a glass.

  • Width: bedside tables can be as narrow as you like as long as they are not overpowered by the size of the bed

  • Depth: Make sure you leave enough space to get out of bed easily. Any deeper than 60 cm (24 inches) and it can be awkward to get in and out of bed.

Caring For Your Bedside Table

Once you have chosen your bedside table, it is important to know how to keep it looking like new. Bedside tables are in near constant use and are often used to place nick knacks as well as drinks. It is therefore important to look after them. Here is how to keep them looking new, how to clean them as well as some dos and don’ts. Be sure to check and follow the care instructions provided with your bedside table.

Do

  • If you have a solid wood bedside table, we recommend re-oiling or re-waxing periodically (depending on what the item is finished with)

  • Clean up stains and spillages immediately

  • Lamps or other accessories placed on the bedside table should be moved periodically to ensure that the colouration of the furniture matures evenly and uniformly.

  • Use a dish to keep earrings, rings and other sharp items from scratching the table surface

Don't

  • Don’t place drinks directly on the bedside table – use a coaster to avoid rings

  • Don’t place sharp objects (such as keys) directly onto the bedside table to avoid scratching the surface

  • Don’t place the bedside table too close to radiators or other sources of heat
