Console Table Buying Guide

A console table is a table that sits up against a wall. It is typically narrow and sometimes secured to the wall for stability. The beauty of the console table is that it is narrow enough to fit in hallways, corridors and small spaces, offering valuable storage space where you may not be able to fit a traditional table or chest of drawers.

A console table is one of the most welcoming pieces of furniture in the home. It graciously accommodates keys, wallets, mobile phones, post, magazines as well as offering the perfect space for decorative features such as lamps, ornaments, pictures and flowers.

Console tables have come a long way since their conception in France in the 1700s. A typical console table had 2 legs, with a half moon-shaped top. With only 2 legs, the table was unstable and therefore it was attached to the wall with an S-shaped ‘console’ (the French term for ‘bracket’, hence the name). Attached to the wall, it gave the impression that it was floating.

Over the years console tables have evolved to have three or four legs, making them much more sturdy and removing the need to secure to the wall. Console tables of the 21st century have typically more storage and designs now include drawers, shelves and sometimes cupboards.

In this guide to console tables we talk you through everything you need to know about console tables, the different styles available, how to find the perfect sized console table, how to care for your console table and much more.

Which Console Table?

There are a huge number of console tables available to suit all interiors and storage requirements. You may choose to pick a console table based on storage needs or based on style.

Console tables are available with varying levels of storage depending on your needs. Simple console tables without any storage are ideal if you’re just looking for somewhere to place a lamp or flowers. For those of you who demand storage as well as style, some console tables also have drawers. Drawers in console tables are typically wide and shallow, ideal for storing post or documents.

A large number of console tables come complete with shelves – typically one or two, which are really useful for storing magazines or books.

Look out for console tables with even more storage options, such as shoe racks (ideal for hallway console tables) and wine racks (ideal for console tables in the dining room or kitchen). Take a look at the Provence Oak Console Table which comes complete with wine rack and drawers.

If you are a family with children, we recommend a console table with storage – the shelves are a perfect spot for lunchboxes and PE kits!

Even if you opt for a console table with no storage, don’t forget that there is valuable storage under the console table – ideal for storing a bench or box.

In terms of design, there is a console table to match almost an interior. From Scandinavian design to modern glass and metal console tables, as well as country-style or antique console tables, you are sure to find a design to match your home. We recommend looking for a console table made from high quality materials, such as solid wood.

Shopping for a New Console Table

When shopping for a new console table, there are a few questions to ask yourself to help you find the right one.

Is the console table for decorative purposes? Storage purposes? Or both?

This is an important consideration, as it will help narrow down your options. If the console table is purely for aesthetic purposes, you aren’t limited to console tables with drawers or shelves. If it is for storage, think about what you want to store in it and how much space you need.

You might also want to consider how it is going to be used, if it is going to be a busy space for keys, mobile phones etc you might want to consider a more durable console table.

Where Will it Be Placed?

Think about where you intend to place the console table. This will help you find a console table that is the right length, width and height. Typical places for a console table include hallway, bedroom (doubled-up as a dressing table – just add a mirror and a stool!), living space (especially in an open plan living space where you need a room divider) and dining room (as an extra serving spot).

Buy Online or In-Store?

This is a very common question and both options have their benefits. Some people find touching and feeling a console table in store very useful, however you will probably find more choice and a better deal in terms of pricing online. Make sure that wherever you purchase it from accepts refunds and offers a delivery service if required.

Console Table Style Guide

There is a console table for almost every style of interior. Whilst extravagant console tables are available, we find the most popular style of console table is quite neutral as it allows people to accessorise it to match their interior.

Material

The material used to make the console table impacts the style of the console table greatly. Solid wood console tables are sturdy, reliable and versatile, fitting with almost any interior. Popular solid wood console tables include oak console tables, pine console tables and walnut console tables. For really modern interiors, you might want to consider a glass or metal console table with sleek lines.

How to Accessorise?

A console table lends itself to accessories. Light up a dark area by placing a lamp or candle on a console table. Twin lamps are an easy way to create a symmetrical look. Mirrors are also a popular choice with console tables, especially in entranceways. You can also use a console table to ground a piece of art. It gives a work of art a base so it’s not lost on a big wall.

Other accessories that complement a console table include ornaments, picture frames, pot pourri, vases, coffee table books and more.

Where to Place Your Console Table?

Dining room: Console tables offer an extra serving space in the dining room instead of a sideboard or buffet – entertaining. You can also flank the console table with dining chairs that don’t fit around the table.

Living room: Console tables are especially useful as a room divider in an open plan home. Try placing a console table behind a sofa to split the living area from the dining area. Or place the console table against the wall to double up as a coffee table.

Bedroom: Console tables double up as a dressing table – just add a mirror and tuck a dressing table stool neatly underneath.

Study: Console tables make a good alternative to a desk in a study, especially if you don’t have space for a larger home office desk. A console table is a perfect size for a small laptop. A console table with shelves will also be useful for storing books and files.

Measuring for Your Console Table

It is extremely important to take accurate measurements before purchasing a console table. Once you have decided where to place your piece of furniture, take a note of the surroundings. As the console table relies on being flush against a wall, have a look at how flat your wall and your flooring is. If you have uneven or sloping walls or floorboards you may need to consider securing your console table to the wall.

Also take a look at the skirting boards; thick skirting boards often found in Victorian houses can obstruct console tables and prevent them from sitting flush against the wall.

When taking measurements, be sure to measure the

  • Height: this is especially if you would like the console table to sit under shelves or a mirror. Typically a console table is 75-80cm (approx. 30inches) (around hip height)

  • Length: how wide is the space you have allocated to the console table? We recommend leaving several centimetres leeway either side of the console table. Console tables really differ in length, and can range from 60cm (24inches) to 200 cm (80inches)

  • Depth/Width: how far can you afford the console table to jut from the wall? Make sure you leave enough space for people to pass.

Caring For Your Console Table

Once you have chosen your console table, it is important to know how to keep it looking like new. Care tips really vary depending on the individual console table. Be sure to check and follow the care instructions provided with your console table.

Do

  • If you have a solid wood console table, we recommend re-oiling or re-waxing periodically (depending on what the item is finished with)

  • Clean up stains and spillages immediately

  • Lamps or other accessories placed on the console table should be moved periodically to ensure that the colouration of the furniture matures evenly and uniformly.

Don't

  • Don’t place drinks directly on the console table to avoid rings

  • Don’t place sharp objects (such as keys) directly onto the console table as this risks scratching the surface

  • Don’t place the console table too close to radiators or other sources of heat

  • Don’t drag the console table across the floor as this can damage the furniture as well as your floors.
