Acacia is a beautiful wood most famous for its durability, medicinal qualities and use in furniture.
Because of its great strength it is used in beams that support buildings – it's so hard it is often used by to make parrot perches as it can stand pecking beaks!
Acacia is used to create fragrances and essential oils as well as a treatment for inflammation. Some also use extract from the acacia tree as a detoxifying supplement.
Furniture makers often choose to build pieces from acacia because of its pleasing tones and strong structure. These qualities mean that the furniture is very hard-wearing and will last for a long time. Acacia is perfect for outdoor furniture and is often used for hardwood floors when the owner wants an exotic edge.
Interestingly, acacia seeds and shoots are also used in East Indian and South American cuisines due to their spicy and distinctive flavour.
Acacia is perfectly suited for furniture as is it one of the most attractive and functional materials on the market. Native to the North of India, our acacia wood is grown by farmers on their own land and is also used to make tools, trinkets and doors. The growing properties of the acacia tree means that the wood is very dense which is why it is hard-wearing and durable. So much in fact, that tools and furniture are often passed down from generation to generation without breaking.
Aesthetically the acacia tree is renowned for it characterful contrasting colours and stunning grain. It also possesses a quality called 'chatoyancy' or 'cat's eye' effect; this causes a surface to change colour in different lighting conditions.
Though acacia is amongst the hardiest of woods it is always prompt to look after it, especially if kept outside.
Because acacia is naturally resinous, it is resistant to smells and stains and can be cleaned with just soapy water. To really protect your acacia furniture, you may wish to wipe the wood with teak oil with a lint-free clean cloth.
May sure you do so in the direction of the grain, then let the teak oil absorb for a day before applying a sealant.
